Mable
Lucie Attwell was born on 4th June 1879 in Mile End, London, England, the sixth in a
family of eleven children. At the age of 15, whilst still at school, she submitted some paintings to a publisher. To the surprise of her family she received two guineas for her work. |

On
leaving school she submitted her portfolio of work to a London publisher, It was accepted
and from that day on she was to earn her living from her drawings. Eventually Mabel managed to save up enough money to pay the fees for a formal art education |

It was whilst studying at St. Martins School of Art in 1908 that she met and married fellow student Harold Earnshaw, they made their home in Dulwich, south London and had three children, Peggy, Peter and Brian |

The
demand for her work was increasing all the time, she was asked to illustrate childrens
books, magazine articles, underground posters, toys and China. Her work was instantly
recogniseable, wide-eyed children and animals in bold colours, she even invented a fairy
type creature called a Boo-Boo. In 1911 she collaborated with Valentine and sons to produce illustrations for postcards, they were issued in sets of about 24 every year and became very popular, they were sold in their millions. |
