The Story
Florence Upton was born in New York of English parents in 1873 | ||
She was 16yrs old when she returned home with her mother after her father died | At the age of 22 she illustrated her first book written by her mother, Bertha. It was called "The adventures of two Dutch dolls" | |
The Golliwogg became an instant success, Florence added more illustrations and the book was reprinted as "The adventures of two Dutch dolls and a Golliwogg | ||
There followed a further twelve books describing the adventures of Golliwogg all of them eagerly snapped up by an ever growing following of children | ||
Postcards, children's china and numerous other items were sold bearing Florence Upton Golliwogg design | In 1917 Florence donated her entire collection of drawings and the now famous Golliwogg doll to the war effort. It was auctioned at Christies and went towards the purchase of an ambulance | |
Sadly, in 1922 Florence Upton died, she was buried in a cemetery near to her home in Hampstead. On her stone were engraved the words.... | ||
